Govt approves additional 87,587 tonnes sugar export quota for 2025–26
The government has approved an extra 87,587 tonnes of sugar exports for the 2025–26 season (October–September), based on requests from sugar mills.
Earlier, 1.5 million tonnes of exports were allowed, with an additional 500,000 tonnes announced in February. However, mills applied for only 87,587 tonnes, and the remaining quota has now lapsed.
Mills must export their allotted quantity by June 30, 2026. If they export at least 70% by then, they can ship the remaining amount by September 30, 2026. If they fail to meet the 70% target, the unused quota will lapse and may be given to other mills.
No deadline extensions will be allowed except in special cases. Quotas cannot be transferred between mills.
Mills that fail to export 70% will face cuts in future quotas equal to their shortfall. For example, if a mill exports only 400 tonnes out of 1,000 tonnes, 300 tonnes will be deducted from its next allocation.
All types of sugar can be exported within the quota. Refineries can export refined sugar under agreements with mills, as long as it stays within the mill’s quota.
Mills that violated stock rules earlier are not eligible for export quotas this year. Supplies to SEZ refineries are counted as exports, and exports under the Advance Authorisation Scheme will continue.
Violations of these rules may lead to action under existing laws. Mills must report monthly exports on the government portal.
So far, India has exported 315,000 tonnes of sugar between October and February out of the total allowed 1.5 million tonnes.
