India ready to sign any fair trade deal: Piyush Goyal
Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said India is working to increase foreign direct investment (FDI) and foreign institutional investment (FII). Speaking at The Economic Times Startup Awards in Bengaluru, he said FDI inflows have recently seen a strong rise, and the government is making it easier for global capital to enter India.
Goyal added that India’s exports in the first half of FY26 have grown, and the country is on track to achieve faster export growth than last year. In FY25, India’s exports reached a record $825 billion, with merchandise exports touching $220.12 billion in the first six months of FY26.
The government is preparing a second ?1 lakh crore startup fund, mainly for deep-tech innovation. It is also considering allowing pension funds and insurance companies to invest in startups, similar to Western models.
Startup investments have grown strongly, with ?1 lakh crore raised across 33 IPOs since 2021. Lenskart founder Peyush Bansal said public criticism of startup IPO pricing is healthy and should be listened to.
On US tariffs, Goyal said tariffs are paid by Americans, not Indians, and India’s focus is on finding competitive advantages. The US currently imposes a 50% tariff on Indian exports, including a 25% penalty for buying Russian energy. India and the US are working on a bilateral trade agreement and aim to double their goods and services trade to $500 billion by 2030.
Goyal said India will sign any trade deal that is fair and in the national interest. Trade agreements with the EU and US are in advanced stages, and deals with Oman, New Zealand, and Chile may be concluded soon.
He emphasized that India is now negotiating with advanced economies and aims to contribute to global growth as it pursues the Viksit Bharat 2047 vision.
On China, Goyal said the government is open to discussions on easing investment rules, including Press Note 3, which requires government approval for FDI from countries sharing a land border with India.
