Tamil Nadu Minister Urges Centre to Consult States on US Tariffs
With the US hiking tariffs on Indian goods from 25% to 50%, Tamil Nadu Industries Minister TRB Rajaa urged the Modi government to consult manufacturing and export-heavy states like Tamil Nadu before taking further steps. “We want to give our inputs, but we haven’t been approached yet,” he said in Chennai.
Tamil Nadu recorded India’s highest GDP growth in 2024-25 at 11.19%, its first double-digit growth in 14 years. The state contributes 41.23% of India’s electronics exports worth $14.65 billion, and is a major player in textiles, automobiles, and auto components.
Rajaa said Tamil Nadu, with only 5.9% of India’s population, contributes 10% to the nation’s GDP. While supporting the Centre’s stance against Trump’s tariffs, he criticised the US President’s tone towards India.
Speaking at the GCC Next Summit in Chennai, Rajaa invited global companies to “test Tamil Nadu” and experience its business advantages. He credited the state’s growth to distributive economic policies, inclusive politics, and the contribution of both Chennai and tier-2 cities.
