Half of India’s Auto Parts Exports to US Hit by 50% Tariff

US President Donald Trump’s decision to raise tariffs on Indian imports to 50% will affect nearly half of India’s $7 billion (?61,000 crore) annual auto parts exports to the US, industry executives said.

The US had already imposed a 25% duty on cars, small trucks and their parts since May 3, and 10% on parts for commercial vehicles, earth-moving equipment and tractors. The latest move extends the higher duty across categories, hitting 32% of India’s total auto parts exports, as the US is the largest buyer.

India does not export vehicles to the US but charges a 5–15% duty on US auto parts. Trump says the tariff hike is retaliation for India’s oil imports from Russia, which he claims undermine US national security amid the Ukraine crisis.
