Onion Export Ban Lifted, But Impact Remains; Exporters Seek Govt Support

Although the Centre lifted the onion export ban in May 2024, exporters say the damage still lingers.

The issue began in August 2023 when the government imposed a 40% export duty to control local prices. In December 2023, it enforced a complete export ban. Though lifted in May 2024, just before the Lok Sabha elections in Nashik, the government retained restrictions — including a 40% duty and a Minimum Export Price (MEP) of $550 per metric ton.

Exporters say these measures made Indian onions too expensive for global markets. As a result, buyers turned to other countries like China and Pakistan, who took over India’s traditional export markets.
