India-US Trade Deal: India May Allow Some GM Product Imports

India is considering allowing imports of certain processed genetically modified (GM) farm products from the US as part of a trade deal. This may include items like soybean meal and dried grains used in animal feed — even though India currently bans GM corn and soybean imports.

Indian and US officials have been in intense talks to finalize the deal before a July 9 deadline, when the US plans to raise tariffs. US officials recently said both countries are close to an agreement.

India remains cautious about GM food imports due to concerns over farmers’ livelihoods and food security. While GM crops like mustard and brinjal (eggplant) face legal and regulatory hurdles, India already imports GM-based oils (soy, canola) and grows mostly GM cotton.

Negotiations in Washington have been extended beyond June 27 to resolve remaining issues and possibly reach an interim deal. President Trump recently said a “very big” deal with India may be coming soon.
