Odisha’s Women Farmers Export Mangoes to Italy, Gain Global Recognition
Jyotirmayee Pradhan, a woman farmer from Dhenkanal, Odisha, has never been abroad—but her mangoes have. This summer, they’ve made their way to Italy, thanks to growing international demand.
Pradhan and a group of women farmers have perfected the art of harvesting spotless mangoes, sorting them by size, and packaging them to meet global standards. Their efforts have turned into a successful export initiative that’s gaining momentum across Europe.
Pradhan is a board member of the Baladevju Women Farmers Producer Company Limited, a women-led FPO with over 1,000 members. The group has already exported mangoes worth ?1 crore to Dubai and is now exporting Amrapali mangoes to Europe with support from Grant Thornton Bharat and HDFC Bank’s Parivartan initiative under the STREE programme.
So far, the FPO has shipped 10 tonnes of mangoes to Italy and aims to export over 50 tonnes by the end of the season. Over 100 women orchard owners are benefiting from the programme.
