US Bans Arecanut Leaf Plates and Cups Over Health Concerns
The United States has banned the import of single-use plates and cups made from arecanut (betel nut) leaves, citing health risks from naturally occurring toxic alkaloids in the leaves. These substances, one of which is a known carcinogen, may transfer to food and pose dangers to consumers, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
This ban significantly affects Indian exporters, especially in Tamil Nadu and South Karnataka, where over 600 units manufacture these eco-friendly products. India dominates the global arecanut leaf dinnerware market, valued at ?3,500 crore annually, holding over ?2,500 crore of the share.
Arecanut leaf plates are considered a greener and cheaper alternative to plastic, but similar bans have already been enforced by Canada and Australia. The FDA’s Import Alert, issued on May 8, applies to all dinnerware made from the Areca catechu plant.
From November 2023 to October 2024, India exported 3,407 shipments of areca plates, mainly to the US, Israel, and Germany, showing a 10% growth. India is the world’s largest exporter, followed by Sri Lanka and Vietnam.
The FDA clarified that other plant-based dinnerware, like those made from bamboo, sugarcane, or sorghum, is not affected by this ban.
