US Tariff Hike Challenges India's Medical Device Exports

The United States has imposed a 26% reciprocal tariff on medical device imports from India, a significant increase from the previous rates of 0-6%. This move is expected to impact India's medical device industry, which exported approximately $714.38 million worth of products to the U.S. in the financial year 2023-24.

Industry experts express concern that the higher tariffs will reduce the competitiveness of Indian medical devices in the U.S. market. Rajiv Nath, Forum Coordinator of the Association of Indian Medical Device Industry (AiMeD), stated that the new tariffs could pose significant challenges to the sector's growth. ?

Despite these challenges, the U.S. tariffs on medical devices from other countries are higher: China faces a 34% tariff, Vietnam 46%, and Japan 24%. This suggests that Indian exports might retain a relative advantage in the U.S. market. ?

In response to the tariff hike, Indian industry leaders are urging the government to engage in bilateral trade negotiations to address these imbalances and to provide support to domestic manufacturers to enhance their competitiveness. ?

The full impact of these tariffs will depend on various factors, including potential trade negotiations and the ability of Indian manufacturers to adapt to the changing trade landscape.?
