Impact of U.S. Tariffs on Indian Shrimp Exports

The U.S. has imposed a 27% tariff on Indian shrimp exports, significantly affecting India's seafood industry. In the 2023-24 fiscal year, India exported approximately $1.9 billion worth of seafood to the U.S., with "Vannamei Shrimp" comprising a substantial portion. Previously, the maximum tariff was around 8%, but with the new tariff and additional countervailing duties (CVD), the total could rise to approximately 45%.

Despite these challenges, some experts suggest that India's shrimp exports might still retain a competitive edge. The tariffs imposed on other major shrimp-exporting countries are higher than those on India. For instance, China faces a 34% tariff, Vietnam 46%, Bangladesh 37%, Thailand 36%, and Indonesia 32%. This relative advantage could help Indian exporters maintain a foothold in the U.S. market.?

However, the increased tariffs are likely to make Indian shrimp less competitive overall, potentially leading to reduced exports and financial strain on producers. The U.S. is a significant market, accounting for about 40% of India's total shrimp exports. ?

In response to these developments, stakeholders in India's seafood industry are exploring strategies to mitigate the impact, such as seeking alternative markets and negotiating with U.S. counterparts. The situation remains dynamic, and the full consequences of the tariffs will unfold over time.
