Apple Growers Fear Impact of Lower US Import Duties
Indian apple growers are worried about US pressure to reduce tariffs on American goods, including Washington apples, fearing it will hurt local farmers.
Concerns Over Rising Imports
In 2018-19, before the import duty increased from 50% to 70%, US apple imports were 1.28 lakh metric tonnes.
After the duty hike, imports plummeted to just 4,486 MT by 2022-23, reducing their value from $145 million to $5.27 million.
When the duty was cut back to 50% in 2023, imports surged nearly 20 times in a short span.
Why Growers Are Worried
If duties drop further, Washington apples could be cheaper or similarly priced as premium local apples, leading consumers to prefer the imported brand.
Local growers already struggle against cheap Iranian apples, priced as low as ?50-60 per kg.
High production costs in hilly terrains, expensive labour, transport, and inputs make it difficult for Indian farmers to compete.
???? Bottom Line: Indian orchardists urge the government to keep high import duties to protect local apple growers from unfair competition.
