Govt Imposes 10% Duty on Masur Dal, Extends Duty-Free Yellow Pea Imports
The government has imposed a 10% import duty on lentils (masur) while extending duty-free yellow pea imports until May 31, aiming to stabilize domestic supply, according to a Finance Ministry notification.
???? New Import Duties (Effective March 8)
Masur Dal: 5% basic customs duty + 5% Agriculture Infrastructure and Development Cess (AIDC).
Yellow Peas: Duty-free import extended until May 31.
???? Background
Import duty on masur was removed in July 2021, with an AIDC exemption added in 2022.
India imports lentils and yellow peas mainly from Canada, Russia, and Australia.
???? Why These Changes?
To keep pulse prices stable while supporting Indian farmers.
Yellow pea imports were first made duty-free in December 2023 and have been extended three times.
In 2024, 30 lakh tonnes of yellow peas were imported out of 67 lakh tonnes of total pulse imports.
