India to Exhaust 1 Million Tonne Sugar Export Quota in Two Months: ISMA

India is set to complete its 1 million tonne sugar export quota by April, says Deepak Ballani, Director General of ISMA.

???? Current Status

600,000-700,000 tonnes already exported or contracted.

Sugar marketing season runs from October to September.

The quota was allowed by the government in January 2024 after restricting exports last year to maintain domestic price stability.

???? No Additional Quota for Now

ISMA is not seeking more exports this season but may discuss it next year, expecting a good sugarcane crop.

???? Sugar Supply & Demand

2024-25 Opening Stock: 80 lakh tonnes

Estimated Production: 272 lakh tonnes (down 15% from last year)

Total Availability: 352 lakh tonnes

Annual Consumption: 280 lakh tonnes

Closing Stock: Around 60 lakh tonnes (government usually aims for 50-55 lakh tonnes).

???? Sugar Prices & Challenges

Current Sugar Prices: ?3,800-4,050 per quintal.

Fair Remunerative Price (FRP) for sugarcane has risen 5.5% CAGR since 2014, but sugar prices have grown only 2% CAGR.

Minimum Selling Price (MSP) of sugar has not changed since 2019 (?31/kg), while production costs are around ?41/kg.

???? Ethanol: A Lifeline for Sugar Mills

With low sugar prices, producers are increasingly diverting sugarcane to ethanol for stability.

Government controls ethanol production limits.

ISMA suggests higher ethanol prices and diversification into other products for long-term industry viability.

???? India is the second-largest sugar producer globally, after Brazil.
