Impact of Trump’s Tariff Threat on Indian Drugmakers: Dr. Reddy’s Reacts
US President Donald Trump’s plan to impose tariffs on pharmaceutical imports may not significantly affect Indian drugmakers, according to Dr. Reddy’s MD GV Prasad. He believes Indian companies will remain competitive in the generic drugs market, even with tariffs.
Speaking at the BioAsia conference, Prasad noted that shifting all pharmaceutical production to the US is impractical due to capacity and cost constraints.
Trump recently announced plans for a 25% or higher tariff on semiconductor and pharmaceutical imports, with further increases expected over the year.
Indian drugmakers play a crucial role in the US generic drug market, supplying nearly half of all prescriptions in 2022 and saving the US healthcare system $408 billion, according to IQVIA.
