Tamil Nadu’s leather industry, which produces 38% of India’s leather goods, is celebrating the removal of duties announced in the Union Budget.
Key Announcements:
Wet Blue leather – Exempted from basic customs duty.
Crust leather – 20% export duty removed.
Impact:
Exports expected to grow from ?3,000 crore to ?8,000 crore.
Tamil Nadu to claim nearly 40% of this growth.
Boost for Footwear & Leather Industry:
The Focus Product Scheme aims to enhance productivity, quality, and competitiveness in leather and non-leather footwear. This will:
Support design, component manufacturing, and machinery.
Generate 22 lakh jobs.
Achieve a turnover of ?4 lakh crore with exports of ?1.1 lakh crore.
