India's Fruit, Vegetable, and Floriculture Exports Surge Amid Innovations in Perishable Logistics

India's exports of fruits and vegetables experienced an 11% increase in value, reaching $1.8 billion during the financial year 2023-24, despite a 10% drop in volume to 3.91 million tons.

Floriculture exports also rose by 8%, totaling $208 million, although volumes fell slightly to 34,132 tons, according to the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development.

Hyderabad International Airport emerged as a key player, witnessing a 25% surge in fruit and vegetable exports during the first half of FY2024-25.

Pradeep Panicker, CEO of Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA), attributed this growth to the addition of new exporters and state- of-the-art infrastructure at the GMR Aero Cargo Logistics Terminal. The airport also marked the resumption of poultry exports, with over 800 tons of hatching eggs shipped during the period.

Adani Airports reported a 6% rise in perishable cargo handling in H1FY2025, with Mumbai, Ahmedabad, and Lucknow airports facilitating significant exports of vegetables, meat, and mangoes.

Meanwhile, Maersk highlighted strong growth in banana exports and a promising outlook for frozen processed potato shipments, buoyed by its upcoming cold storage facility at the Maasvlakte terminal in Rotterdam Port.

As for Airlines, Cathay Cargo recorded a 50% year-on-year increase in perishable handling in 2024. driven by exports of fruits, vegetables, and chilled fish. Similarly, Etihad Cargo reported a 19% growth in perishables tonnage from India in H1FY2024-25, leveraging its FreshForward service.

Airports and logistics operators are also increasingly incorporating sustainability into their operations. Hyderabad Airport for instance employs green building practices, optimized refrigeration systems, and sustainable packaging materials.

Adani Airports and Cathay Cargo have implemented measures to reduce environmental impact, while Etihad Cargo focuses on using recyclable materials and optimizing routes to enhance sustainability.
