Govt should increase export duty on raw hides’
Regional chairman, Council for Leather Exports (CLE) Asad Iraqi said that the leather exporters are worried because the Union budget 2024 would adversely affect the leather industry as the leather exporters would face more problems in procuring raw material (raw hides) for their manufacturing units.
Talking to TOI, Iraqi said, “The area of concern for leather tanneries is that the Indian raw material (rawhide) is being exported in a huge quantity due to which the rates of raw material has increased two-three-fold in the local market and this has badly affected the leather industry as tanneries of Kanpur and Unnao are working on their one-fourth capacity”.
If this situation persisted for a longer period, it would surely have a negative impact on tanneries, footwear, bags, leather belts and garment industry, he added.
The problem of leather industries is that it is losing on raw hides due to heavy export, and the government in the budget announcement has reduced export duty on wet blue export which is likely to increase prices of wet blue in the local market because most of the wet blue is exported and thus create its shortage.
The industry is already losing on raw hides because of its heavy exports and now the reduced export duty on wet blue will create more trouble, he pointed out.
He suggested an increase in export duty on raw hides to protect the domestic industry as it would enhance availability of raw material and value-added products could be manufactured. He suggested that under invoicing should be checked to control export of raw material.
Meanwhile, Organising secretary of All India Defence Employees Federation, Saurabh Singh Chauhan said that the Union Budget has failed to reach the expectation of the govt employees & pensioners.
“Not only the govt employees, the entire working class and their trade unions are disappointed with the budget,” said Singh. “No government employee or their organisation have demanded for improvement in NPS, the demand is only to scrap the NPS and restore old pension scheme,” he said. tnn
Onion farmers and exporters were disappointed that the Union Budget did not address removing the minimum export price (MEP) and export duty on onions. Currently, Indian onions, priced higher than those from Pakistan and China due to these added costs, struggle to compete in the global market.
