?India Targets Increase in Global Rice Export Share from 40% to 60%?
Indian Rice Exporters Federation (IREF) President Prem Garg said India aims to raise its global rice export share from 40% to 60% through the Bharat International Rice Conference (BIRC) being held in New Delhi.
????Garg said India is now both the world’s largest rice producer and exporter, having surpassed China, and increasing exports will help farmers. The conference has drawn farmers from 20–21 states, around 55 diplomats, and 3,000–4,000 exporters and startups. Live rice processing plants are also being showcased.
????Calling it IREF’s first global initiative, Garg said the response has been far greater than expected.
????On US tariffs, he said they will have minimal impact because the US imports only 270,000 tonnes, while India has opened a new market of 2 million tonnes this year.
????Garg urged the government to ban pesticides and improve port and logistics support, noting that the rice industry is otherwise self-sufficient.
????The two-day BIRC 2025 has brought together delegates from over 80 countries, including major importers, exporters, scientists, and policymakers.
