Tamil Nadu Farmer Turns Desert Roses into a Rs 60 Lakh Business
In a small village in Tamil Nadu’s Thiruvallur district, farmer Jalandhar turned his love for plants into a thriving business. When he first saw the Desert Rose (Adenium obesum), he saw potential where others saw risk. That belief now earns him up to Rs 60 lakh a year.
Jalandhar began growing plants over 40 years ago, but his journey with the Desert Rose started in 1986. He travelled to Thailand, Taiwan, and Vietnam to learn grafting and hybrid techniques. Today, his 15-acre farm has over 450 varieties of Desert Roses in multiple colours and forms. Prices range from Rs 150 for small plants to Rs 12 lakh for rare types.
These hardy plants need little care — just sunlight and water twice a week — and are exported to countries like Dubai, Jamaica, and Mauritius. In 2015 , he shipped one lakh plants to Dubai. The Tamil Nadu Horticulture Department also recognised his work with a Rs 10.65 lakh subsidy.
Jalandhar now hopes to open his farm to visitors — showing how one man’s patience and belief bloomed into global success.
