India to Review Textile Export Impact After US Tariff Hike
Union Textiles Minister Giriraj Singh will meet key industry players next week to assess the impact of US President Donald Trump’s recent decision to impose a 25% tariff on Indian exports, including textiles and garments.
US Tariff Worries
The US is India’s biggest textile market, accounting for 25% of total textile exports. The new tariffs threaten India’s $10.3 billion textile trade with the US, as well as other sectors like gems, shrimp, leather, chemicals, and machinery. However, exports like pharmaceuticals, electronics, and petroleum are likely to be exempt.
Consultations Begin
Officials say it’s too early to decide on policy steps. The minister wants direct feedback from exporters to understand on-ground challenges and discuss strategies, including opportunities from the new India–UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA).
Focus on New Markets
The India–UK FTA offers better market access and tariff benefits for Indian textiles. The government is also eyeing Europe, the Middle East, and Africa to diversify export destinations. A new Export Promotion Mission will support these efforts
Exports Goal Still OnDespite global challenges, the goal of reaching $100 billion in textile exports by 2030 remains unchanged. The upcoming meeting will help shape a resilient and forward-looking trade policy.
