Trump Threatens 25% Tariffs on Indian Goods
US President Donald Trump has warned that Indian imports could face tariffs of up to 25% if a trade deal isn’t reached by August 1, 2025. This has sparked concern over future India-US trade ties.
Trump stated, “They are going to pay 25%,” and suggested the range could be 20–25%. Despite calling India “friends,” he remains firm on trade pressure.
Talks are ongoing. US officials say India is open to more American goods, but further negotiation is needed. India’s Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal is optimistic about reaching a deal in time.
Trump has long criticized India’s high tariffs and strict rules for foreign goods, calling the trade relationship “very tough.” In 2024, the US imported $87 billion in goods from India, while India imported $42 billion from the US.
India dismissed Trump’s claim of an imminent “zero-tariff” deal as premature. Officials are preparing for possible retaliatory tariffs if the US acts.
With time running out, both countries face pressure to finalize a deal that could affect not only their own economies but also global trade.
