India’s Apparel Exports Decline, Losing Global Market Share
Despite recent growth, India is the only major textile-exporting country whose apparel exports have declined over the past seven years.
In FY25, India’s apparel exports rose 10% to $15.9 billion, helped by strong US and European demand and reduced competition from Bangladesh.
According to WTO, India’s 2024 exports were $16.36 billion — still lower than the $18.41 billion in 2017.
Exports had dropped to $12.97 billion in 2020 and are slowly recovering.
While global textile exports grew from $454 billion in 2017 to $557 billion in 2024, India’s global market share fell from 4.05% to 2.94%.
Other countries like Bangladesh, Vietnam, Cambodia, Turkey, and Indonesia increased their exports during this time.
Even as China’s share declined due to higher labor costs, India failed to take advantage. Competitors like Bangladesh, Vietnam, and Pakistan filled the gap instead.
“India posted a negative growth rate in apparel exports, unlike other major exporters,” said Sanjay Jain, Chair, ICC National Textiles Committee.
