How to Export Carrots from India: A Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Market Research

Identify potential markets: Look for countries with high demand for carrots, such as UAE, Bangladesh, Malaysia, or European nations.

Understand import requirements: Each country may have specific regulations on pesticide residues, quality grades, and packaging.

Step 2: Register Your Business

Set up a legal entity (proprietorship, partnership, or company).

Get a PAN card in the company’s name.

Open a current bank account in the name of the business.

Step 3: Obtain Import-Export Code (IEC)

Apply for an IEC from the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) via

This is mandatory for any export activity.

Step 4: FSSAI Registration

Since carrots are food items, you must be registered with the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).

Step 5: APEDA Registration

Register with APEDA (Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority) for fruits and vegetables.

APEDA provides training, financial assistance, and helps find buyers abroad.

Step 6: Quality Standards and Grading

Ensure carrots meet the export quality standards (size, color, shape, moisture content).

Use pre-cooling and proper post-harvest techniques to extend shelf life.

Step 7: Packaging and Labelling

Use export-grade packaging (ventilated cartons or plastic crates).

Label as per destination country’s norms (weight, origin, treatment, expiry, etc.).

Step 8: Find Buyers

Use B2B platforms like TradeIndia, Alibaba, or IndiaMART.

Participate in trade fairs and APEDA-supported buyer-seller meets.

Step 9: Logistics and Shipment

Choose the right mode of transport: Air freight for fresh carrots, or reefer containers for sea shipments.

Hire a licensed Customs House Agent (CHA) to handle port procedures.

Submit shipping documents: Invoice, Packing List, Phytosanitary Certificate, Certificate of Origin, etc.

Step 10: Customs Clearance & Export

File shipping bill via ICEGATE (Indian Customs portal).

Ensure compliance with any Phytosanitary inspections at the port.

Once cleared, goods are loaded and shipped.
