Tamil Nadu Fishermen Demand Seafood Pricing Panel
MADURAI: With the 61-day fishing ban ending soon, Rameswaram fishermen are urging the Tamil Nadu government to form a committee to set fair seafood prices.
“Fishermen work hard but get low prices for their catch,” said X Nallathambi, president of the National Traditional Fishermen Federation. He noted that while export-quality shrimp usually sells for ?700 per kg during the open season, prices drop to ?300 per kg right after the ban.
Shrimp caught near Mandapam, known as "Mandapam Shrimp", also suffers from low pricing despite its reputation.
Nallathambi called for a shrimp pricing committee including members from fishermen’s associations, the Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA), and exporters to ensure fair rates.
N Devadoss, president of the Rameswaram Fishermen Cooperative Society, added that fishermen face high diesel and tax costs and contribute significantly to the economy. He stressed that the government must act on this long-standing demand to safeguard their livelihoods.
