Basmati Price Rise Driven by Demand, Not India-Pakistan Tensions: Exporters*

The recent rise in Basmati rice prices is due to increased international demand, not tensions between India and Pakistan, says the All India Rice Exporters Association (AIREA).

AIREA President Satish Goel stated that prices for Basmati varieties 1509 and 1718 have gone up slightly since March, driven by demand from countries like Saudi Arabia, Iran, and Iraq. He confirmed that trade continues smoothly without any disruptions.

Former AIREA president Vijay Sethia added that prices for the 1509 variety dropped from Rs 62 per kg in September 2024 to Rs 52 per kg by February due to a bumper harvest. However, growing demand in March pushed prices up to Rs 58 per kg. He emphasized that the rise is purely market-driven.
