India Launches First Sea Shipment of Bhagwa Pomegranates to U.S.

India has successfully exported its first commercial sea shipment of Bhagwa pomegranates from Maharashtra to the United States. The consignment, comprising 4,620 boxes (approximately 14 tons), arrived in New York in March 2025, marking a significant milestone in India's fresh fruit exports .?

Traditionally, Indian pomegranates were exported to the U.S. via air. The shipment was dispatched by Kay Bee Exports, with pomegranates sourced directly from farms in Maharashtra. The fruits underwent irradiation at the Maharashtra State Agricultural Marketing Board's facility in Mumbai, complying with U.S. import requirements .?

This development is expected to boost India's pomegranate exports, which reached 72,011 metric tons valued at $69.08 million in the 2023-24 fiscal year. The U.S. joins other key markets such as the UAE, Bangladesh, and the Netherlands in importing Indian pomegranates .?
