India Exports 3,348 MT of Silk Waste in 2023-24, Focuses on Domestic Use
India exported 3,348 metric tonnes (MT) of silk waste in 2023-24, according to the Directorate General of Commercial Intelligence and Statistics (DGCIS). While raw silk remains India's primary import, the government is working to increase domestic silk waste utilisation.
Key Initiatives:
New spun silk mills are being set up in Assam, Bodoland, and Manipur.
Small-scale spinning machines are being promoted under the Silk Samagra-2 scheme.
The Central Silk Board is ensuring high-quality P1 basic seeds for genetic purity.
Private entrepreneurs are being encouraged for bivoltine seed cocoon and silkworm seed production.
Sericulture Growth:
Mulberry cultivation has grown from 2.19 lakh hectares in 2014-15 to 2.63 lakh hectares in 2023-24.
No proposals for Special Sericulture Zones (SSZs) have been received, as states handle this matter.
???? Government Goal: Reduce silk imports and strengthen domestic silk waste processing to boost India’s sericulture sector.
