Indian Rubber Glove Makers Warn of Substandard Chinese Imports Before New Quality Rules
Hyderabad: Indian rubber glove manufacturers have raised concerns about a massive import scam, alleging that unscrupulous importers are stockpiling low-quality non-medical gloves before the Medical and Surgical Gloves (Quality Control) Order, 2024 (QCO) takes effect.
Key Concerns:
The QCO will regulate ?600-700 crore worth of glove imports, ensuring only BIS-certified gloves—imported or locally made—can be sold for medical use.
It applies to surgical, medical examination, and postmortem rubber gloves, preventing bulk imports of substandard products.
Once implemented, all medical and surgical gloves must meet BIS certification for quality and safety.
Allegations of Fraudulent Imports:
Importers are allegedly hoarding non-medical gloves to relabel and sell them as medical gloves once the QCO is enforced.
Chinese gloves, restricted by US tariffs, are being rerouted through Malaysia and Thailand, disrupting the Indian market and posing health risks.
Call for Government Action:
Vikas Anand, IRGMA spokesperson, warned that falsely classified gloves are being sent to hospitals, endangering doctors and patients. He urged the government to act immediately to prevent a public health crisis.
