DRI Probe Uncovers Green Peas Scam at Chennai Port
A textile import fraud investigation by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) at Chennai Port led to the discovery of a green peas scam, resulting in the arrest of a Customs official.
How the Scam Unfolded:
Textile Import Fraud: Importers misdeclared polyester-woven fabric (which has a Minimum Import Price) as cotton-woven fabric to evade higher duties.
Suspicious Trade Route: While probing the textile case, DRI noticed a New Delhi-based company importing yellow legumes via Dubai, but landing them at Chennai Port instead of North or West Indian ports.
Green Peas Smuggling: Green peas, restricted for import only through Kolkata Port at ?200/kg MIP, were misdeclared and smuggled through Chennai. DRI seized 100 tonnes of such shipments.
Officials Involved:
Customs officials, including an examiner, appraising officer, and superintendent, allegedly colluded in clearing these shipments.
A raid at one officer’s house uncovered ?60 lakh in cash and jewellery.
M. Sathishkumar, Additional Commissioner of Chennai Customs, was arrested for his role in clearing these consignments.
