India alerts firms after us faces shortage of iv fluids.
Pharmaceuticals Export Promotion Council of India has asked manufacturers of intravenous fluids with approvals from the US FDA/EU/SRA countries to submit their willingness to supply intravenous fluids to the United States.
Indian Embassy in Washington had informed the exporters body under the Commerce Ministry about a critical shortage of IV fluids prevailing in the US.
US Health & Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra in a letter to healthcare leaders had cautioned about the supply chain impacts from Hurricane Helene, just a day before Hurricane Milton was expected to strike Florida.
Helene has disrupted supplies of IV fluids for health systems nationwide, due to the flooding of a critical plant in western North Carolina.
Baxter International's plant in Marion, N.C. produces 60% of the IV solutions used every day in the United States, or about 1.5 million bags, and the plant is offline.
Baxter said the company is working to boost production at other facilities. It aims to reopen its North Carolina plan in phases but it may not approach normal production for some time. It hopes to "return to 90% to 100% allocation of certain IV solution product codes by the end of 2024."
